The deputy president of Helwan University said the university's council decided yesterday to give an honorary doctorate to Ahmed Bassiony, an assistant professor in the university's Faculty of Fine Arts. Bassiony was martyred in Cairo's Tahrir Square during Egypt's January 25 Revolution. This is the first honorary doctorate granted by Helwan University. The university council decided to name the largest general hall in the university, which seats 1,500 students, after Bassiony as well. El-Nashar said the decision was made to prove the university council cares about the martyrs of the revolution that has changed Egypt's history. Nashar said Bassiony was about to finish his doctorate at the time of his death, which was his mother's hope and one of the reasons the university decided to honor him thus posthumously.
