ANKARA, Turkey — An official says Turkey's top general has inspected troops in the country's southeast where Kurdish rebels have been fighting for autonomy. A local official, speaking on condition of anonymity inline with government rules, says Gen. Necdet Ozel and other generals on Wednesday visited two military bases in the cities of Malatya and Diyarbakir. Pro-Kurdish Firat news agency, citing local sources, says helicopters have ferried troops to border units. But NTV television, citing unnamed military officials, says no immediate cross-border offensive against Kurdish rebels in Iraq is planned. Turkish warplanes have recently staged several airstrikes on suspected rebel bases in Iraq and artillery units fired salvos on rebel targets across the border.
