The Washington Institute warned Egypt's ruling military council of the unprecedented increase of the military trials against Egyptian civilians. In a report it added such trials could lead to confrontation between the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and the citizens, which threatens the current political change in Egypt and the legitimacy of the military institution. The report said the SCAF turned the military trials into a form to confront the thugs and terrorism spreading in Egyptian streets after the Egyptian January 25 Revolution as a way to eradicate opposition. The report viewed the trials targeting activists as unfair, especially since the SCAF insisted on trialing the figures of the former regime in civil courts. The report added the SCAF focuses on prosecuting civil activists over arresting criminals who escaped from prisons during the state of insecurity after the January 25 Revolution. It is important to mention the human rights organizations said there has been approximately 11,000 military trials against civilians since the ascent of the military council to power. About the demonstrations scheduled for September 9, which aims to cancel military trials, the American institute expected such initiatives adopted by activists will lead to a return of demonstrations to Tahrir Square and consequently a new confrontation between the people and the SCAF.
