Dozens of Egyptians demonstrated before the Israeli embassy in Cairo Tuesday, despite the first day of Eid al-Ftir, the biggest Muslim holiday. Eid al-Fitr celebrates the end of Ramadan, the obligatory month of fasting for Muslims. Egyptians gathered to protest the return of the Israeli flag to the embassy. The flag was removed by demonstrators protesting a border incident in which the Israeli military fired on an Egyptian border position as they pursued militants attempting to cross into Egypt. The demonstrators repeated demands from the previous protests, such as the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador to Cairo, the closure of the Israeli embassy, and a strong response to the death of those Egyptian soldiers on the Israeli-Egyptian border. Security forces have strengthened their presence in the area to protect the Israeli embassy. The demonstrators said that they would not abandon their unmet demands, raising slogans expressing their intention to resume the protest during Eid al-Fitr.
