Alexandrian police saved a rare sea turtle Monday, after receiving intelligence that a vendor was displaying the 250-kilogram animal, and planned on butchering it to sell its meat. The hunting sea turtles and the sale of turtle meat are illegal in Egypt. The turtle was sent to the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, where it was placed in a tank. Experts examining the turtle said it is no less than 90 years old. It is now on display at the Alexandria aquarium.
