CAIRO: Egypt saved a rare sea turtle on Monday after reports were given to a police station in Alexandria that a street vendor was displaying the 600 pound animal and had planned to sell it and butcher it for meat. Although the hunting of sea turtles and other endangered species is illegal in Egypt, enforcement of such international laws are rarely followed. The turtle was transferred to the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries before being given to the Alexandrian aquarium where it is now on display. Why the animal was not released back into the wild is not yet clear. According to local reports, the turtle is more than 90-years-old. BM
