The Taz Palace Innovation Center will host a concert for Bedouin band Jerkin tomorrow at 9:30 p.m. The band uses traditional Bedouin melodies and expresses the tradition and identity of Sinai's native people. The Jerkin band formed in Siani and derives its songs and melodies from Bedouin chants – rituals traditionally accompanied by a Rebec, a lute and various percussive instruments. Traditional Bedouins are known to use expired ammunition boxes – leftovers from the many conflicts in the geo-politically charged region – as drums. Bedouin music often lacked percussive instruments, save for a primitive drum made from goat skin, but years of war in the Sinai left the land littered with soldiers' old water pots and ammunition boxes, many of which became a part of the musical tradition. The band formed in Areesh City in 2003 and the band members perform their version of Sinai folklore in many festivals throughout Egypt.
