The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not “sit in an ivory tower nor is it isolated from what took place during the January 25 Revolution,” said Foreign Affairs Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr yesterday. “The Egyptian revolution set an example for the whole world,” said Amr. Insults against Egypt or Egyptians abroad will not be tolerated at the ministry, Amr continued, emphasizing that Egyptians abroad are a top priority, particularly in light of the revolution. With regard to Syria, Amr urges a political and diplomatic solution and condemned the military and security crackdown. “Communication is essential and I wish to reach an understanding with the leaders of the revoltuon,” said Amr in reference to a question about the revolutionary demands at a press conference. “I'm very optimistic, and things are not as bad as they seem,” he added. Amr mentioned a discussion between Germany and Egypt regarding smuggled money, claiming that the ministry and authorized parties are working toward an agreement. “Security forces are capable of maintaining stability in Sinai,” Amr said when asked about Israeli allegations that the peninsula is slipping into chaos. “The visit to Germany was successful and both parties agreed to replace debts with special projects,” Amr said, adding that Germany committed 300 million euros, 80 percent of which will be dedicated to Egyptian initiatives.
