A number of psychiatrists and intellectuals said that the incident of violence against Ahmed Said Hashed, 42, also known as Ahmad Barbar, is likely to occur again If the Ministry of Interior does not regain control of the Egyptian streets. Ahmed, a fugitive from Tora Prison, was killed earlier this week when more than 100 residents of Desouk in Mansheya cut off his hands and feet and beheaded him as punishment for years of terrorizing the area along with his thugs. Psychiatry professor Dr. Jamal Froez told Youm7, "The act of revenge by the people of Desouk against this thug comes as a result of the state of repression and pressure experienced by Egyptians from 1952 through 2011… [This] manifested in the revolution and the breaking down of barriers which also resulted in this act of violence which is retaliation for years of repression." Froez believes that this scene could be repeated within a year or two if the Ministry of Interior does not take control of the streets. However, he said it is unlikely to deter other “thugs" who are inherently psychopathic and anti-social and heedless of social norms. Dr. Abdul Hakim, the former director of Khanka Hospital and a psychiatrist, said this incident, like the revolution, occurred as a result of accumulated pressure that needed an outlet and due to the lack of security provided the citizens of Desouk. Artist and Critic Ezz el-Din Najib said this incident is a new phenomenon to the people of Egypt in recent months, especially with the increasing lawlessness in the streets and mounting frustration with the slow pace of change. He said psychologists and social workers must propose solutions to violence on the streets of Egypt.
