CAIRO: The first Taraweh prayer in Tahrir Square was lead by the revolutionary orator, Sheikh Mazhar Shaheen. Dozens of protestors participated, along with the former chairman of Egypt judges' club, Zakria Abdel Aziz, who was there to support the protestors' participation in Taraweh prayer. Taraweh is a series of prayers in Ramadan, lead by a Sheikh. Sheikh Mazhar Shaheen announced the Taraweeh from the top of a podium in Tahrir Square. He will continue to sit-in in retribution of the martyrs and the prosecution of corrupt figures. “I don't seek any position, but I do hope to be an Imam of a free mosque not directed by an official,” he said. During his sermon in Tahrir Square, Shaheen called for the return of the independence of Al-Azhar institution without restrictions, since Al-Azhar's dignity is part of Egypt's and Islam's dignity. Shaheen thanked the armed forces and the military council for their contribution in demonstrators Iftar (meal to break the fast) on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan. He said, “If their contribution was true, we appreciate their participation.” Shaheen also prayed for October's and January 25 Revolution's martyrs and the military council. He called for converting Suez Canal's passage fees to the Egyptian pound to raise the pound's value. He said this will help Egypt to recover from the economic crisis.
