MADRID: The Israeli ambassador to Spain demanded an invitation to participate in Spanish authorities' investigation of Egyptian businessman Hussien Salem. The ambassador claims Salem holds Israeli citizenship, said Motaz Salah al-Din, the head of the public initiative to recover money smuggled out of Egypt by members of its former ruling regime. Al-Din added that the ambassador offered to present citizenship documentation to the Spanish authorities in order to play an active role in the investigations into Salem. Salah al-Din confirmed that Spain's Justice Minister refused the ambassador's request, as Salem is a Spanish citizen. He also said Salem was recently readmitted to the hospital. Salem holds both Spanish and Egyptian citizenship. Al-Din also said that although Spanish authorities released Salem's son and daughter after investigating them for money laundering, they remain under house arrest in Madrid and are prohibited from leaving the country. The Spanish Foreign Minister said after finishing the investigation Spanish authorities will consider extraditing Salem to Egypt, by mentioning the extradition recommendations issued by the Spanish Cabinet and Foreign Ministry.
