EGYPT
Egyptian security forces clash for a second day in Cairo with hundreds of youths demanding the speed up prosecution of police officers accused of brutality during mass protests that forced Hosni Mubarak to step down. More than 1,000 people are injured. Riot police deploy around the Interior Ministry building and fire in the air or use tear gas as demonstrators throw rocks and firebombs. The fighting leaves streets littered with rocks and debris and a heavy, white cloud of tear gas hung over the area.
___
LIBYA
Libyan officials say government forces remain in control of areas around a mountain range southwest of Tripoli that rebel fighters claim they are using as a base to advance toward the capital. Rebel fighters based in villages in the western Nafusa mountains have been slowly solidifying their hold, forming a second front against Muammar Gadhafi's troops, who are also battling rebels in the east.
___
SYRIA
Syrian tanks and helicopters sweep through a rebellious northwestern province shelling at least one village in an attack that killed four people. The military shells Rameh village to quell daily protests against President Bashar Assad in the area. Hundreds of other residents flee the village.
___
YEMEN
A Yemeni air force jet mistakenly bombs a bus in a southern city controlled by Islamic militants and suspected al-Qaida members, killing four people, while clashes between militants and soldiers on the ground leave 23 dead on both sides. The bombing comes as part of daily government attacks on militants who last month seized Zinjibar, the provincial capital of Abyan.
___
BAHRAIN
Bahrain's king says an independent commission will investigate allegations that protesters' rights were violated during the deadly crackdown on anti-government unrest. King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa's announcement comes as Sunni rulers are trying to open reconciliation talks with the Shiite-led opposition, months after the regime crushed the protest campaign for greater freedoms.
