A former Egyptian banker acknowledged in front of a New York court that he raped a hotel worker. He faces charges that may lead to millions of dollars in compensation. The court ordered Mohamed Abdel Salam Omar, former chairman of the bank of Alexandria and the Egyptian American Bank, to be placed under supervision for a year. He was arrested in May for raping a housekeeper at the Pierre hotel in Manhattan. The housekeeper, Doris Offei, filed her case against Abdel Salam Omar at a federal court in Manhattan, demanding five million dollars compensation. The Egyptian banker denied the accusations during investigation, but acknowledged committing the crime in court. Omar's lawyer said the banker acknowledged his crime because it was the only way he would be released to return home and see his sick wife. This incident came just two weeks after the former chief of the International Monetary Fund Dominique Strauss-Kahn was accused of raping a worker in another hotel in Manhattan. Strauss-Kahn, however, denied the accusations.
