The Library of Alexandria postponed a seminar scheduled for Tuesday evening to be attended by a number of security heads along with the Governor of Alexandria. It was cancelled because of clashes between Egyptian youths and library security. The youth were denied entry to the symposium under the pretext that there were thugs among them. In response, the youth demonstrated at Conference Hall Square near the front plaza of the Library. The demonstrators were angered because the symposium was set to honor top state security officials but not to work for reconciliation between the people and the police. As a result, the youth demonstrated against the officers, whom they considered complicit in killing demonstrators during Egypt's January 25 Revolution. Talaat Sadat, founder of the National Party of Egypt, Major General Ahmed Abdel-Baset, director of security of Alexandria, and a number of security heads were scheduled to attend the symposium. Jaber Hassan, secretary general of al-Wafd Party in Alexandria, rejected honoring the murderers of martyrs of the revolution. He said the management of the library promoted the event as a reconciliation between the people and the police, and that the people were surprised to find the ceremony was actually intended to honor State Security officers. The deputy director of security at the Library said it is likely the symposium will be completely cancelled.
