Arabic: تهاني الجبالي Born: Nov. 1950 Tahani el-Gibali was Egypt's first female judge and is the vice-president of the Supreme Constitutional Court. El-Gibali graduated from Cairo Universiry's Faculty of Law in 1973. She began her career as a lawyer and soon proved herself qualified to be the first woman elected to the Permanent Office of the Union of Arab Lawyers. She later became president of the women's committee in the union. After Egypt's January 25 Revolution, el-Gibali refused to accept the constitutional amendments proposed by a committee appointed by Egypt's ruling military council, on the grounds that the constitution is a social contract that should be based on agreement between different social and political tendencies.
