Arabic: عمرو موسى Born Oct. 3, 1936 Amr Moussa is an Egyptian diplomat and likely presidential hopeful. Moussa served as Secretary-General of the Arab League from 2001 until May 15, 2011. Moussa was Egypt's minister of foreign affairs from 1991-2001 under the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak. In 2004, tens of thousands of signatures were collected from online communities petitioning Moussa to run for president in 2005, Egypt's first multicandidate presidential elections. There was no response from Moussa, and when he was asked about his presidential hopes by BBC in 2006 he replied that he hoped to continue his post at the Arab League until the end of his term. It is rumored that former president Hosni Mubarak offered Moussa the position at the Arab League as a way to remove him from public spotlight in Egypt. On the day Hosni Mubarak resigned from the presidency, February 11, 2011, Reuters announced that Moussa was resigning from his post at the Arab League. Moussa has neither confirmed nor denied a bid for the position, instead stating that every Egyptian citizen has the right to run for any political office. He has, however, expressed appreciation for those who support him as a candidate. Moussa has reportedly agreed to the nomination, but will wait to make an official announcement until Egypt's constitutional reforms are finalized.
