AMMAN, Jordan: The flow of Egyptian gas to Jordan was stopped Wednesday morning after the explosion of the main gas pipeline in al-Arish, northern Sinai, an official of the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said. The official said Jordan receives approximately 14 million m² of gas per day. He said all Jordanian electrical powers must depend on synthetic fuel and diesel fuel until the flow of gas resumes. The explosion is the second at the station since February 5, 2011 when an explosion stopped the flow of gas to Jordan until mid March. According to an agreement between Egypt and Jordan in 2001, Egypt is to supply approximately 22.3 million m² of gas daily to Jordan. This amount is efficient to produce 65 percent of Jordan's electricity. In 2010, Egypt and Jordan agreed to increase the quantity of gas to 27.9 million m² per day, but this agreement has not yet been signed. Arabic here.
