Egyptian natural gas exports to Jordan will resume soon under a new agreement with amended prices, a Jordanian government source has said. The source told Jordanian daily Al-Dustour that the all preparations will be finalized this week for supplies to resume. Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Khaled Touqan had earlier said that Jordan will pay higher prices for Egyptian gas supplies under the new deal. He added that his country will continue to import Egyptian gas despite repeated attacks on gas pipelines in Sinai, which have led to supply cuts since 5 February. A 2004 agreement stipulated that Egypt export 240 million cubic feet of gas to Jordan annually. Jordan depends on Egyptian natural gas to generate 80 percent of its electricity needs. To cope with the recent suspension of Egyptian gas supplies, it used diesel and heavy fuels to operate its power stations. This alternative procedure cost Jordan US$5 million daily.
