Ahmed Elmohamady appeared as a second-half substitute in Sunderland's goalless away draw with Arsenal. Although he almost left Sunderland after struggling to convince manager Martin O'Neill last season, Elmohamady had a place in the Black Cats' first game of the season. The Egypt full-back came on as a 69th minute to replace striker Frazier Campbell as O'Neill succeeded in containing the Gunners. Elsewhere, Egyptian defender Adam El-Abd played 90 minutes for Brighton & Hove Albion, who lost their Championship opening game 1-0 against Hull City. The Egyptian-owned Hull were lifted by an 85th goal from Jay Simpson.
