Jermain Defoe hit five goals as Tottenham Hotspur moved into fourth spot in the Premier League table with a demolishing 9-1 victory over Wigan Athletic on Sunday. Tottenham went to the locker room with a slender 1-0 lead, thanks to a ninth-minute header from towering striker Peter Crouch. They ran riot after the break, with England striker Defoe scoring a hat-trick in a seven-minute spell early in the second half. Winger Aaron Lennon added a fifth on 64 minutes and Defoe netted twice, in the 68 and 87 minutes, to equal the league's single match scoring record and make it a night to forget for Wigan. An own goal by Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland and a Niko Kranjcar shot completed a remarkable victory for Tottenham. Wigan's only goal came through Paul Scharner in the 57th minute. "The lads can't believe it. If you look at the finishing, all the goals were unbelievable. I looked over at the manager and he looked shocked as well," Defoe said after the game. Tottenham are fourth with 25 points from 13 games, eight behind leaders Chelsea.
