Wigan Athletic were beaten 3-0 by a fringe Arsenal squad in the Carling Cup on Tuesday at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners' goals came through a Jay Simpson brace (41 and 66) before Mexican Carlos Vela added a third on 70 minutes. Egyptian striker Amr Zaki played the whole 90 minutes, but couldn't help his team avoid the loss as he started the game as a lone striker due to Emile Heskey's injury. The former Zamalek man didn't have the best of games as he didn't get enough service from midfield.
Vela (L) scored again The tie was totally dominated by Arsene Wenger's men, after the French manager opted to field his young stars in the absence of Theo Walcott, Emmanuel Adebayor and Bakary Sagna, who are all injured. Simpson scored the first goal of the game with a sublime finish after being released by Jack Wilshere's pass. In the second half, Simpson doubled his tally after a lovely run by Vela set the 19-year-old to tap in the empty net. Vela turned from provider to scorer when Johan Djourou's pass found him unguarded, who shrugged off Titus Bramble's challenge before chipping his effort past Kirkland. Zaki's only chance to put his mark on the game was on 87 minutes when Lukas Fabianski's rebound fell in his path, but the 25-year-old hit the bar from close range.
