Spanish giants Real Madrid claimed an easy 2-0 win over Belarusian side BATE in their Champions League group stage opener on Wednesday. Real needed 11 minutes to break the deadlock at Santiago Bernabeu. Guti fed Sergio Ramos with a smart pass inside the area and the Spain defender poked home from close range to fire Los Merengues ahead. Prolific striker Ruud van Nistelrooy scored his 54th Champions League goal in 69 appearances to double Real's advantage 12 minutes after the restart. BATE goalkeeper Sergei Veremko parried Raul's initial shot but the ball rebounded off Dmitri Likhtarovich and went into the path of Van Nistelrooy, who applied a simple finish. In the other Group H game, a splendid free-kick by Alessandro Del Piero gave Juventus a 1-0 home win over UEFA Cup holders Zenit St.Petersburg. The Juve skipper scored the winner 14 minutes from time when he hit a fierce drive from a long-range free-kick that deceived Zenit keeper Vyacheslav Malafeev. The Bianconeri enjoyed a winning start in the group stage as they seek to mount a serious title challenge after missing Champions League football for two years. The Italian giants were punished for being involved in the infamous match-fixing scandal.
