Sir Alex Ferguson accused Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid of using Cristiano Ronaldo as a tool for promoting their presidential elections. The 22-year-old has been targeted by the Spanish duo throughout this season following his magnificent form with the Red Devils in which he has hit 16 Premiership goals so far, helping his team maintain top spot. "Let's be perfectly clear about Real Madrid and Barcelona," Ferguson told a press conference. "Their elections are in the summer." "Since I have been at United and elections have been on in these two clubs, the best players in the world are used. There's no doubt about that," the Scotsman added.
Ferguson But Ferguson insisted the Portuguese international was mature enough to know he is being used. "Make no mistake, Cristiano is intelligent enough to realize he is being used as a pawn," said Ferguson. "It may be right that they want him. That may be correct but there's no doubt there's another motive to it and that's their elections." United are in the process of negotiating a new contract with the Portugeuse wizard that should keep him at Old Trafford until 2012, and Ferguson seems confident about Ronaldo's future at the club. "I am confident (chief executive) David Gill will come to the right deal with his advisers," he said.
