Manchester United celebrated Alex Ferguson's 20th year in charge of the club with a crushing 3-0 home victory over Portsmouth in the Premiership on Saturday. Louis Saha opened the score after just three minutes before Cristiano Ronaldo doubled the lead seven minutes later. Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic ensured the victory six minutes past the hour mark to give a valuable present to the Scottish veteran tactician, who celebrates his anniversary with the Red Devils on Monday. The victory maintained United's position on top of the league table with 28 points, three ahead of second-placed and title holders Chelsea, who play Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. United had an early domination that resulted in the opener as early as the third minute through Saha's penalty.
Saha scored the opener Wayne Rooney latched on to Gary Neville's throw-in inside the area but was brought down by Portsmouth defender Dejan Stefanovic; the referee awarded a penalty-kick and French international striker Saha stepped up to convert the ball home. Seven minutes later, Portuguese winger Ronaldo fired a powerful free-kick that went into the net past hapless keeper David James. Unmarked Vidic completed the rout in the 66th minute after he towered to head home Neville's inch-perfect cross. In another match, Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt scored in each half to lead Liverpool to a 2-0 win over Reading at the Anfield Road. The result put Liverpool in seventh place with 17 points while Reading lie 11th on 13 points.
