Manchester United put an end to a frustrating season so far after giving Wigan Athletic a 4-0 drubbing to win the Carling Cup final that took place at The Millennium Stadium on Sunday. Wayne Rooney sent in a brace in the 33rd and 61st while the tournament's top scorer Louis Saha and Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal each, in the 55th and 59th minutes, to lead their side to victory. United's victory comes after a disappointed season following their departure from the UEFA Champions League, the England Cup and their inability to compete for the Premiership title. Rooney opened the score for United after picking up a loose ball and firing the ball home in the 33rd minute, ending a goal-drought that went on for 12 matches.
Manchester United Boss Sir Alex Ferguson Saha doubled United's lead five minutes to the hour-mark after netting a Gary Neville cross following a brilliant block by the Wigan goalkeeper. Ronaldo score his side's third goal after finished a Saha pass in the 59th minute before Rooney scored again only two minutes later. Nevertheless, Wigan, who suffered from severe defensive problems, tried to save face throughout the entire match with a host of serious attacks over United, who won their second Carling Cup, ever since their 1992 victory.
