Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn announced he will retire from international football after captaining his country to a 3-1 win over Portugal to snatch the third place in the World Cup. "It was my last international match today (Saturday) and I could not have wished for a better final game for my country than this one," Kahn told German media. "It was a great time, but you have to know when it is time to stop." The 37-year-old Bayern Munich keeper won his 86th and final cap in Stuttgart. The appearance against Portugal was Kahn's only participation in this year's World Cup tournament. Kahn was captain of Germany's 2002 World Cup team that reached the final but lost to Brazil 2-0. Kahn won the Golden Ball award for his superb performance that tournament, making him the first goalkeeper in history to claim the trophy. He made his debut in 1995 against Switzerland but suffered a cruciate ligament injury in November of the same year. He was the reserve goalkeeper during the 1998 World Cup in France but became a featured player in the European Championships in 2000 and 2004.
