Birmingham and West Bromwich Albion have been relegated from the Premiership following Portsmouth's 1-0 victory over Wigan on Saturday. Birmingham were held to a goalless home draw with Newcastle United, the result that left them four points behind Portsmouth with just one game for both teams left. A victory for West Bromwich in their remaining two games will not be enough as they lie second from bottom in the Premiership table with 29 points, nine adrift of Portsmouth. Elsewhere, Steven Gerrard scored twice to help Liverpool beat Aston Villa 3-1 at the Anfield Stadium. Gareth Barry's goal in the 58th minute cancelled out Fernando Morientes' opener early in the third minute before Gerrard netted a brace in the 61st and 66th minutes. The result put Liverpool in third place of the league table on 79 points, on level with second-placed Manchester United, who have one game in hand. In other matches, Everton beat UEFA Cup finalists Middlesbrough 1-0, Fulham edged Manchester City 2-1 and Charlton Athletic were held to a goalless draw with Blackburn Rovers.
