Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Al-Nenni played full 90 minutes as Basel made it to the Europa League last-eight with a 2-1 aggregate win over Russia's Zenit St. Petersburg. The Swiss champions held on to claim the last-eight ticket after a first-half header from Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel gave Zenit a 1-0 win on the night. Basel had to thank goalkeeper Yann Sommer for a crucial penalty save to deny Zenit skipper Roman Shirokov near the end; in what was a defining moment in the game. Egypt duo Salah and Al-Nenni played well as they had to fend off the Russians for most of the game, with Marcelo Diaz dismissed for two bookable offences just before the break. Al-Nenni, who had suffered a circulatory problem just a day before the game, almost scored a superb goal on his full Europa League debut when he combined with Salah before missing the target from close range.
