Barca, United lead Champs race
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 30 - 03 - 2010

Berlin - It's yet another delicious England-Germany match-up as England's Manchester United once again face their German nemeses, Bayern Munich on Tuesday, as the 2009/10 rendition of the UEFA Champions League reaches its quarter-final stage.
European champions Barcelona aslo face English opposition for the first time since defeating Manchester United in last season's final when they take on Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Meanwhile United travel to Bayern Munich to play the team they beat in the 1999 final tonight in the first-leg ties for a place in the last four.
Olympique Lyon, who eliminated Real Madrid in the previous round, meanwhile take on Girondins Bordeaux in an all-French tie on Tuesday, while Italian champions Inter Milan entertain Russians CSKA Moscow on Wednesday.
Olympique Lyonnais vs Bordeaux
Olympique Lyon are perfectly aware that their clash with Girondins Bordeaux on Tuesday has little to do with domestic duties and is all about making a real impact in Europe at last.
Lyon, hosting the Ligue 1 champions in the first leg of their all-French Champions League quarter-final tonight, are determined to seize the chance to advance to the last four of European club soccer's premier event for the first time.
"We're not playing against Bordeaux, we're playing against ourselves," Lyon keeper Hugo Lloris, who was instrumental in his side's shock elimination of Real Madrid in the previous round, told reporters.
"We must score a goal or two and not concede any. We have all it takes to go through."
Whereas Bordeaux, who under threat from several teams including Lyon in the league title race, are eager to prove that they belong to Europe and can handle the pressure of the big matches.
That was far from obvious on Saturday when they lost 3-1 to Olympique Marseille in the French League Cup final.
Lyon will be almost at full strength, with only defenders Francois Clerc and Cleber Anderson sidelined with long-term injuries, and coach Claude Puel will be able to field his best-possible lineup.
Girondins' chances of moving past Lyon will depend heavily on how those two fare on the Gerland pitch.
French clubs have never been drawn together in the Champions League before and there have been only two previous such pairings in any European competition. Olympique Marseille met Monaco in the 1998-99 UEFA Cup and Auxerre played Lille in the same competition in 2004-05.
Bayern Munich vs Man United
Bayern Munich and Manchester United go into a crucial week at home and abroad that starts with their Champions League showdown on Tuesday. After the first leg at the Allianz Arena, both teams play potentially season-deciding matches in their domestic leagues before the return leg in Manchester.
Bayern goes into the match with its confidence shaken by two straight Bundesliga losses that have knocked the team from the top of the standings. Bayern's 2-1 loss at home to Stuttgart and Schalke's 2-0 win at Bayern Leverkusen gave Schalke a two-point lead ahead of Saturday's match with Bayern in Gelsenkirchen.
Manchester United warmed up for the Champions League with an emphatic 4-0 win over Bolton in the Premier League. United manager Alex Ferguson rested top scorer Wayne Rooney and defender Rio Ferdinand on Saturday but said their absence was just a precaution ahead of a "big week" for his side.
Bayern coach Louis van Gaal's attempt to rest his two biggest stars " Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben " didn't go as planned.
"It would be bitter if we lost such a top player," Bayern defender Philipp Lahm said.
Robben is getting around-the-clock medical treatment and captain Mark van Bommel, a fellow Dutchman, said on Sunday "it already looks better".
Arsenal vs Barcelona
A return to Arsenal on Wednesday will be an "emotional" occasion for Thierry Henry, the man named the club's greatest ever player following his move to Barcelona. Henry twice won the Premier League during his time with the Gunners and became the club's all-time record goalscorer in a hugely successful eight-year spell in North London.
But the forward was pitted against a number of old friends when Barcelona was drawn to face Arsenal in the Champions League, with the first leg of the quarter-final coming at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
Barcelona will be without midfielder Andres Iniesta who has a hamstring injury and faces a race to be fit for the home leg next week, but there is likely to be a homecoming for striker Thierry Henry who played for Arsenal from 1999 to 2007 and was in the side that lost to Barca in the 2006 Champions final.
Internazionale vs CSKA Moscow
Inter Milan face the rare prospect of using Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg against CSKA Moscow, to boost their flagging domestic confidence rather than the other way round. The Italian champions were imperious in eliminating Chelsea in the last 16 with a 1-0 win in London but their recent Serie A form has been poor by comparison.
Their lead at the top has been cut from nine points in mid-February to just a point following Saturday's 2-1 defeat at title rivals AS Roma, where Inter hit the woodwork three times but looked much more nervous than usual.
Inter, who have not reached the semi-finals since 2003 and have an unbeaten home record this term, have Brazilian centre back Lucio and compatriot midfielder Thiago Motta suspended.
