Surgical revolution fights obesity
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 29 - 02 - 2012

CAIRO - The fear of abdominal fat is disappearing, which endangers people's health. Obesity affects vital systems of the human body such as the liver and kidneys and is considered the main cause of cardiac diseases, diabetes and stroke.
Last March, the World Diabetes Union in New York stated that weight loss operations were an efficient method to cure diabetes type 2 under specific conditions.
Specialists found a way of getting rid of fatty tissue, which would particularly benefit patients suffering from illnesses that were very difficult to treat.
Dr Ralf Senner, a professor of obesity surgery in Schulenburg, Germany, specialises in one-day robot-assisted surgeries. Due to this unique surgical technique, Dr Senner is internationally known as a pioneer in robot-assisted surgery.
His motto is ‘Lose your burden forever and start a new life'. Dr Senner says robotic surgery for obesity is a new development and a medical revolution.
He recently held a press conference in Cairo and stated that the new technique was much safer than human hands and more precise.
“The use of robots in surgery shortens the operation and anaesthesia, guarantees a high success rate and few complications like diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver and cancer,” he added.
Dr Senner pointed out that the new technology would soon be applied in Egypt.
“But who is suitable for this kind of surgery?” He noted that it could not be used for all types of obesity. It also requires a specialised centre and specially trained surgeons to avoid complications, as well as appropriate follow-up procedures being in place.
According to Dr Maha Radamis, a nutritional expert, sticking to a diet was essential after undergoing surgery. She noted that the patient also needed to follow certain procedures to avoid obesity in the future; above all a diet comprising all nutritional elements, minerals and vitamins.
If such a diet were adhered to, a patient would be able to keep a stable weight and live a healthy life. The aforementioned surgery is suitable for those who suffer from excessive and life threatening obesity. 90 per cent of patients with diabetes type 2 have shown improvements, and patients with cardiac diseases and hypertension have had equally good results.

New identity
David suffered from obesity and underwent surgery in Germany. He managed to lose 90 kilograms. “Before the operation I had no control over my eating habits, every single moment I thought of nothing but food. I had no friends and stayed away from people.
Now, after the surgery, I have started to create a new identity. I can wear the kind of clothes I was dreaming to have,“ David said.
Dr Senner noted that the operation took only a couple of hours and the patient had simply to stay in the hospital for three days. He added that the surgery could be performed on overweight patients between the age of 14 and 65.
Dr Radamis added that a lack of nutrients, like magnesium, calcium and potassium led to weight gain, and so did an unhealthy diet.
According to specialists, an obese patient's psychological issues should be resolved before undergoing surgery, for example someone might try to commit suicide if they fail to lose weight. It is also necessary to diagnose the cause of obesity and choose a special diet tailored to the patient's needs.
