CAIRO - The Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, held talks in Cairo Thursday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the latest regional developments and issues of bilateral concern. The Tantawi-Abbas talks have also focused on the stalled Middle East peace-making process and removing all obstacles impeding its resumption. In the meantime, President Abbas, who is also the chairman of the Fatah group, briefed Field Marshal Tantawi on the outcome of the talks that were held in Cairo on Wednesday to reconcile rival Palestinian factions and form a national unity government. The Tantawi-Abbas meeting came after Hamas movement, which controls the improvised Gaza Strip, set new terms for implementing a reconciliation deal with Fatah group. President Abbas and Khaled Meshaal, Hamas' political chief in exile, agreed in Qatar earlier this month to form a unity government led by Abbas. But in a rift with the Hamas' leadership outside the Gaza Strip, officials in the Hamas-ruled enclave swiftly criticised the accord, particularly its call for Abbas to serve as prime minister as well as president.
