CAIRO – Egypt's Prime Minister Essam Sharaf on Thursday held a meeting with a number of German experts to discuss setting up a world medical centre for people injured in road accidents in Egypt, Al-Youm Al-Sabea reports. Egypt has the highest rate of road accidents of any country in the world. In 2010, more than 6,000 Egyptians were killed in road accidents, according to official statistics. An average of 18 people were killed per day in 2009 due to automobile collisions, according to official reports, while, unofficially, about 12,000 people are killed and 50,000 injured in Egypt each year due to road accidents. After Thursday's meeting, Egyptian Minister of Health Amr Helmi said that Egypt will pay for 20 per cent of the project, with the rest coming in the form of donations from Egyptians living in Germany and other European countries. Dr Sami Salem, a member of the German Doctors' League, said this project should have been launched five years ago, but the ousted regime thwarted the initiative. Salem pointed out that this centre will treat people seriously injured in road accidents nationwide. German experts added that there is a plan to organise free training courses in Germany for Egyptian doctors.
