CAIRO - Up to 120 top students at Al-Azhar University yesterday organised a protest at the headquarters of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, calling for the release of two other top students. The pair were arrested late on Wednesday and have been charged with thuggery and blocking a road. The protesters, who said that they will not go unless their demand is met, also asked the military to ensure the implementation of a decision made by Prime Minister Essam Sharaf to appoint the two best students in each faculty at Al-Azhar as assistant professors. Meanwhile, a Council source said that the matter is being handled by the Military Prosecution, and that “the suspects will be released if proved innocent. We will not interfere with the prosecution or the judiciary.”
