CAIRO – Some 70 trains on Cairo-Upper Egypt line were not operated on Monday and Sunday, as residents of Al-Ayyat, in Giza Governorate massed on rails, the spokesman of the National Railways Authority Mohamed Hegazi told the official Middle East News Agency on Monday (MENA). According to the same source more than 200,000 passengers were detained. Thousands of protestors gathered late on Sunday, objecting to the installation of a relay station by a mobile phone company in Ayyat. They set fire to the rails refusing to end their protest until the station is removed. About 240 foreign passengers cancelled their booking, owing to the unrest. Hegazi added that the number of protesters has been increasing since Sunday afternoon, currently estimated to reach more than ten thousand.
