CAIRO – Egypt's prominent Salafi preacher Safwat Hegazi called for forming a committee of wise Muslim and Christian clergymen to investigate the reasons behind the sectarian tensions and sedition currently erupting between Muslims and Christians against Imbaba church events, the DPA reported on Wednesday. Hegazi suggested that the committee would discuss the issue of conversion from one faith to another. He told Al-Akhbar semi-official paper that Egyptian laws have to be binding to violators whatever their religion or identity. He pointed out that the committee could pinpoint issues where enforced laws are deficient. Hegazi was personally unconvinced of the story related by Abeer the Christian young lady that converted to Islam and who triggered the sectarian clashes in Imbaba. Hegazi added that Ismamists call for a civil state which observes Islamic Shari'a and such a state would never do injustice to Copts.
