CAIRO - Egypt or Qatar could host the next summit for the Arab League because the May meeting scheduled in Iraq could be postponed, the secretary-general said. The six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council called on the Arab League to cancel its summit next month in Baghdad. The GCC is upset with Baghdad's criticism of the ruling Sunni minority in Bahrain. Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa said from Cairo that he expected the May 10-11 meetings would be canceled in part because of the GCC concerns. He said Arab leaders are expected to meet soon to consider proposals for a substitute summit in Qatar or Egypt, Egypt's daily newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm reports. Moussa's tenure as the secretary-general expires this year as he launches a campaign to win election as Egypt's president. Cairo nominated former diplomat Mostafa al-Fiqqi and Qatar backed former GCC Secretary-General Abdul Rahman al-Attiyah as the head of the Arab bloc. Iraqi lawmakers complained the GCC decision was unnecessary at a time when the Arab world is plagued by simmering political unrest. Iraqiya leader and former interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi was mentioned as a possible candidate for Arab League secretary-general.
