CAIRO - Would you like to see a difference or to be, as Mahatma Gandhi said, "the change you wish to see in the world"? You can see a difference or be the change, but this does not happen suddenly. There is a lot you have to do first. If you have taken the initiative, 'renew' your life, so that you can 'keep up'. While if you have not done so, try to start again and take a chance to renew your life with the New Year imminent. An exhibition, in Zamalek, which opened 15 days ahead of the New Year, presented magnificent works of glass by the highly gifted artist Walid Onsy. The exhibits highlight that the combination of both talent and Kinetic energy can yield supreme beauty. Onsy's talent shines through his unique artworks that are displayed in the exhibition. They are all made of fused glass, a process involving the firing of glass, yielding a coloured and patterned finished product. The captivating glass works reflect the artist's heightened artistic sense in general and mastery of the art of glass in particular. When the exhibition of brilliant glass works, which are of Islamic and contemporary patterns, opened, they sparked pleasing thoughts in the visitors' minds whose eyes were magnetised by the exhibits. Any visitor to the exhibition, mesmerised by the bright colours and aesthetically pleasing patterns of the artworks, can realise the value and importance of making the effort to produce what is invaluable. "By the use of glittering colours, I want people to feel good by either using or admiring the work of art," said the artist Walid Onsy, an assistant professor at a Faculty of Applied Arts in the Glass Department. The beauty, emanating from the glass works, "refreshes your mind" and "recharges your battery" while the industry they have involved let you "brush aside trivialities" and "think of what's worthwhile". "The works are magical. The artist is, really, a genius in the art of glass," said a French visitor, amazed by what she saw. Don't miss out on the exhibition and have a happy New Year. Walid Onsy's glass exhibition is being held in the Extra Gallery, 3 El-Nessim St, off Al-Montazah St, Zamalek, Cairo (022735-6293). The exhibition, which runs until January 8, is open daily from 10:30am to 2pm and from 5pm to 8pm except on Saturdays and Sundays.
