Salah bullish about prospects of breaking Rush's goal record
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 12 - 05 - 2018

LONDON, May 12, 2018 (News Wires) - Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah hasn't given up on smashing Ian Rush's Liverpool goalscoring record – as he hailed the forward line that has helped propel him to the brink of history.
Salah has scored 43 goals in 50 games this season during a remarkable debut campaign with the Reds that has already earned him the PFA Player of the Year and Footballer of the Year accolades.
Liverpool have two more games remaining, with Sunday's Premier League finale at home to Brighton and Hove Albion followed by the Champions League final against Real Madrid in Kiev on May 26.
Between them, the Reds attacking trio of Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane has rattled in 89 goals this term.
And Salah said of his strike partners: "Their quality is unbelievable. They always try to give me the ball to score because they know I'm playing to be top scorer.
"They have big quality, they are unbelievable and I'm very proud to be part of the team and to play with them."
Despite standing four goals behind Rush's record of 47 – set in 1983-84 – Salah was confident when asked if still had a chance of overhauling the total. "Anything can happen... I think so!" said the Liverpool forward.
"I prefer to play on the right wing, but sometimes I play as a number 10, sometimes I play number nine and striker.
"The last goal I scored on the left side. It doesn't matter, it's just about finding a space to score.
"I'm not the same player now (as at Chelsea), not at all. I've improved a lot, to be honest. I improved a lot at Roma.
"You can see the finishing, the speed, the power, the threat, but I cannot say everything is on me, because my team-mates have made a difference, the coaches, the staff, they make my game easier and they always try to help me on the field and off it."
Salah needs just one goal to set a new goalscoring record for a 38-game Premier League season. He currently has 31, a tally reached by Alan Shearer, Cristiano Ronaldo and former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.
"You are talking about legends, every one of them scored many goals for many years," said Salah.
"I just want to break the record and we'll see about after."
Salah added that he has proved his Chelsea critics wrong after a superb season for the Reds. The Egyptian striker has been nigh unstoppable in the Premier League this season. He's hit the back of the net 31 times in 35 games, equalling the record for the most goals in a 38-game season.
And, the 25-year-old is the first Premier League player to score over 40 goals across all competitions in a single season since Cristiano Ronaldo pulled it off in 2007/08.
It was also his brace against Roma in the UEFA Champions League which helped his side advance to the final of the tournament where they will meet Real Madrid at the end of May.
Speaking about the success he has enjoyed this season, Salah said he always intended on returning to England to prove his doubters wrong.
"I was here like four years ago and a lot of people said he couldn't [have] success, that I cannot play in the Premier League, [that] it was very difficult for him," Salah said.
"So it was always in my mind to come back. From the first day I left Chelsea, it was always in my mind to make them wrong. I made them wrong."
Salah's prolific form has contributed to speculation that the Egyptian will seek pastures new in the summer, with La Liga giants Real Madrid cited as the likeliest destination. Salah had a three-word response to these claims.
"I'm going nowhere," he told the Echo at the Liverpool Players' Awards at Anfield.
"I'm very happy here, I'm very happy and everything is fine. We have two games now starting with a game on Sunday. It's a very important game and then the Champions League final but I'm very happy here."
Salah added: "Of course I have got ambitions for the future with Liverpool. As you can see we had a great season and now we are in the Champions League final and everyone is excited.
"This is just the start. This is my first year here and it is the same for some other players. I didn't watch all the games last season of the team but this year we have had an unbelievable year.
