Industrial, hospitality expansions in Damietta aim to maximise value of state-owned assets: El-Shimy
Published in Daily News Egypt on 06 - 07 - 2025

Minister of Public Enterprises Sector Mohamed El-Shimy conducted an inspection visit to the Damietta Spinning and Weaving Company (Damiatex), a subsidiary of the Cotton, Spinning, Weaving and Garments Holding Company.
El-Shimy was accompanied by Damietta Governor Ayman El Shehabi, and commenced his tour with a high-level meeting that included several members of the House of Representatives and the Senate from the governorate. Also in attendance were Ahmed Shaker, Executive Managing Director of the Holding Company for Spinning and Weaving; Galal El-Din Suleiman, Managing Director of Damietta Spinning and Weaving; as well as senior officials from the Ministry and the Governorate.
The Minister underscored the importance of executive-legislative coordination, noting that engaging with MPs helps shape balanced development plans and enhances the efficiency and utilisation of state-owned productive assets. He affirmed the Ministry's openness to ideas that contribute to accelerating the pace of development and unlocking the full value of national resources.
During the meeting, parliamentarians presented proposals to strengthen local industry, attract tourism investment, and optimise the use of state assets in Damietta. El-Shimy commended their active engagement in development issues and reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to cooperation that aligns with Egypt's wider economic goals.
El-Shimy pointed out that the Ministry, through its affiliated companies, owns a number of industrial and hospitality facilities in Damietta, including Damiatex, Al-Lisan Hotel in Ras El Bar, and ongoing expansion projects in the hospitality sector. These assets, he noted, form part of a broader vision to support both industrial and tourism development in the governorate.
The Minister highlighted that Damietta Spinning and Weaving is currently undergoing a comprehensive modernisation programme, part of Egypt's national plan to revitalise its historic textile industry. This effort includes significant investment in infrastructure, cutting-edge machinery, and workforce development aimed at increasing production capacity, enhancing quality, and restoring Egypt's global competitiveness in textiles.
Crucially, El-Shimy announced that the development at Damiatex will see the introduction of jeans fabric production for the first time within the Public Enterprises sector. This marks a strategic shift to meet market demand and represents a qualitative leap for Egypt's textile industry.
"This is not merely a factory upgrade," El-Shimy stated. "It is a model of integrated development that reflects the aspirations of the New Republic, using state-owned assets to deliver real economic value."
Damietta Governor Ayman El Shehabi welcomed the Ministry's initiatives, describing the textile development programme as vital to Egypt's industrial renaissance. He praised the inclusion of jeans production as a major milestone and noted the importance of parliamentary involvement in ensuring the success of such national projects.
The visit underscores the government's wider ambition to revive strategic sectors, maximise the return on public assets, and foster stronger ties between policymakers, local communities, and industry stakeholders.
