Electricity, Petroleum Ministers discuss summer energy stability, fuel supply
Published in Daily News Egypt on 20 - 05 - 2025

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat met with Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi at the Ministry's headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to discuss a joint action plan in preparation for the rising energy demands of the summer season. The meeting focused on ensuring energy stability amid escalating temperatures and increasing electricity loads.
During the discussions, the two ministers reviewed the operational strategies of both the electricity and petroleum sectors. They assessed the sectors' readiness and flexibility while exploring alternative scenarios to achieve core objectives—primarily ensuring sufficient electricity supply and maintaining stability across the national grid during peak periods.
The meeting addressed updated indicators reflecting increased energy demand compared to last year's peak loads. Both ministries emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring and analysis of demand trends through joint task forces, ensuring timely and adequate fuel supply to power generation facilities.
Further discussions highlighted recent efforts within the electricity sector to optimize operational performance, improve fuel efficiency, reduce reliance on traditional fuels, and enhance overall energy performance.
Minister Esmat stressed the importance of ongoing coordination among all relevant state entities—particularly the Ministries of Electricity and Petroleum—to guarantee grid stability during the high-demand summer period. He reiterated the government's commitment to Egypt's national energy strategy, which aims to diversify power sources, scale up the use of renewable energy, and integrate storage technologies to support grid stability.
Esmat also addressed the issue of electricity theft and its negative impact on the stability of the national grid. He reaffirmed the government's determination to enhance service quality and operational efficiency, ensuring that energy needs are met in line with Egypt's broader sustainable development goals.
For his part, Minister Karim Badawi underscored that the meeting reflects the integrated and collaborative efforts of the government, especially in aligning strategies across the energy sector to ensure fuel security for power generation. He outlined the petroleum sector's preparations to meet the electricity sector's natural gas and mazut needs.
Badawi detailed specific measures, including the readiness of ports and the extension of pipelines to accommodate regasification ships at Ain Sokhna Port. These ships will import and regasify LNG, injecting it into the national gas grid. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to supply mazut in accordance with the Electricity Ministry's requirements.
