Suez Canal, South Korea discuss cooperation in green transformation

Chairperson of Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Osama Rabie received on Sunday South Korean ambassador in Cairo Kim Yong-Hyun, accompanied by a high-ranking delegation, with the aim of discussing ways of joint cooperation.
Rabie said that the SCA has started its first actual steps towards green transformation by promoting the use of clean energy in operating the pilotage stations along the Suez Canal, and strengthening the capabilities of the authority's fleet to combat the oil spill. In addition, it adopts initiatives to convert its marine units to operate with green fuel.
He presented the developments in navigational channel development projects implemented by the Authority recently, especially the project to develop the southern sector of the canal's navigational course, which aims to duplicate the area from kilometer 122 to kilometer 132, numbering a canal with a length of 10 kilometers. Besides, widening and deepening the southern region of the Suez Canal.
The SCA's chairperson highlighted the continuous strategy of development of Suez Canal to maintain its leading position, enhance its competitiveness and raise its global ranking, by increasing its numerical and absorptive capacity, and raising the navigational safety factor and other navigational advantages that play an important role in gaining the confidence of customers from shipping agencies.
For his part, South Korean Ambassador Kim Yong-Hyun expressed his happiness and pride in his visit to the Suez Canal, stressing the strategic importance of the canal in the maritime community and the pivotal and sustainable corridor it represents for South Korean trade.
The ambassador explained that the percentage of South Korea's foreign trade exceeds 70%, which makes the Suez Canal a major gateway to South Korean trade, praising the huge development witnessed by the projects to develop the canal's navigational course.
