Published in Daily News Egypt on 28 - 03 - 2023

Egypt's Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad held a meeting with Governor of Suez Abdel Mageed Saqr on Monday to discuss the latest developments in the ongoing sanitary landfill project in the governorate.
The meeting also addressed the current status of the waste management system in the governorate and investment opportunities in this field.
The meeting also included Tarek El Araby, the Head of the Waste Management Regulatory Authority; Ali Abu Sunnah, the Head of the Environmental Affairs Agency; a number of concerned leaders in the ministry, and one of the investors in the field of waste management.
During the meeting, Fouad praised the serious cooperation and coordination between the ministry and the governorate to advance the waste system, explaining that there are plans to deal with waste for all governorates of the republic, including the plan for the waste management system in the Suez Governorate.
She noted that the plan was developed by a group of professors and national experts from Egyptian universities and consultants, with the aim to show the amount of waste generated in the governorate, the number of landfills, stations and other infrastructure works.
Moreover, the Minister of Environment reviewed the steps that can be taken and the technologies used within the framework of the integrated management system for municipal solid waste, including infrastructure and operating contracts, the waste law, how to enable the private sector to work in this field, and recycling plants that the state is working on.
During the meeting, the minister also listened to the steps of the project submitted by an investor in the field of waste recycling in Suez Governorate, stressing the need for a technical study on the technology used in the project, explaining that temporary approval will be given, and the project will be evaluated and followed up by a committee from the Environmental Affairs Agency during the coming period.
For his part, the Governor of Suez stressed the need to provide two intermediate stations for the governorate, one in Ataka, and the other in Faisal district, and the two sides agreed on working to solve these problems, as well as the completion of all procedures for handing over these two stations.
