Soma Bay, a coastal resort on the Red Sea in Egypt, hosted the Final World Championship for 2021 held by Oceanman, the global open-water swimming competition organizer, on 3-4 December, welcoming amateur swimmers from around the world.
Only the qualified female and male swimmers can compete at the Finals, but the entire event is open to everyone. The main competitive distances cover 5km to 10km.
The championship witnessed the participation of between 1,500 – 2,000 swimmers from 45 different countries. The top winners will receive generous money prizes ranging between €10k – 15k. The event had a huge turnout of 3,000 attendees
"We are thrilled to host the final round of the biggest and most prestigious swimming event worldwide, in cooperation with Oceanman. Seeing how Soma Bay is a sensational holiday getaway that overlooks the most exquisite deep turquoise waters and enjoys the finest sandy beaches, this event promises to be a bountiful all-around travel experience," stated Ibrahim El-Missiri, CEO of ASDC, the developers of Soma Bay.
Sherif Fathy, CEO of Boost Egypt, a swimming hub that cooperates with the Egyptian government in supporting sports tourism, has expressed his deep gratitude to the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports for supporting the Oceanman competition; allowing Egypt to host the event for the second time in a row, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19. He also thanked the Egyptian Swimming Federation and Oceanman for their valuable efforts in making the event happen.
The championship's finalists and qualifiers, with age brackets ranging from 8 to 70 years old, gathered in Soma Bay for the 2-in-1 grand finale. This exceptional arrangement allowed amateur contestants the opportunity to compete alongside elite professional swimmers from around the world. Amateur participants competed in the open category without prior qualifications.
This was the second edition for the Oceanman Championship in Egypt. Oceanman is one of the biggest open-water swimming franchises in the world. It provides both professional and amateur swimmers the opportunity to achieve their goals in unique locations.
It has 20 races in several different countries around the world: Malaysia, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Russia, Dubai, France, Colombia, Ukraine, Switzerland, Thailand, and Cyprus, etc. Each race qualifies swimmers to take part in the Final World Championship event at the end of each year.
