Egypt's Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad, participated on Tuesday in the Mediterranean Forum for Green Economy and Sustainable Development "Circle the Med", organised by Egypt and Greece from 18 to 22 October.
The conference is organised through the partnership between the Egyptian Ministry of Environment and the European Public Law Organization. It is the first joint interactive platform between the two countries, with the wide participation of representatives of the government, bodies and scientists from both Egypt and Greece. It also witnessed the participation of representatives of Egyptian ministries of electricity, planning, and tourism.
During her virtual speech, Fouad stressed the importance of the forum in consolidating the strong and extended relationship between Egypt and Greece and consolidating the bonds of cooperation between Egypt, the Mediterranean countries and the European Union, which is one of the important lines of defence in facing the effects of climate change.
She added that climate change has become an urgent issue for the world in general and the Mediterranean region in particular, because of its direct impact on sustainable development. She stressed the need to unify efforts between countries to confront the effects of climate change and work to come up with a climate action plan from the climate conference that will be held in Glasgow within days.
The "Circle the Med" forum aims to discuss a set of common topics related to green growth, the blue economy, renewable energy, smart cities and sustainable tourism. It also addresses common challenges and opportunities for the Mediterranean region, improving sustainable production and consumption models, services and infrastructure, in addition to enhancing social, economic, environmental and cultural resilience within societies.
Transition to a circular economy that considers decarbonisation, reuse and recycling is also one of the axes of the conference.
Moreover, Fouad expressed Egypt's support for the Greek initiative to preserve the natural and cultural heritage from the effects of climate change.
