Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad said that her ministry, over the past ten years, has taken effective steps to implement the sustainable transport project in Egypt.
This was in cooperation with development partners, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region Europe (CEDARE), and the German Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES).
During her speech at the second annual conference, the Future of E-Mobility and Urban Planning in Egypt -which was organised by FES in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and CEDARE.
Fouad explained that this conference was the second meeting between partners to discuss the future of electric mobility in Egypt and to study the experiences of other countries. The purpose of the conference was to analyse solutions both at the level of policies and incentives for the private sector and citizens. It was also purposed to figure out implementation strategies for the system.
She pointed out that studies and policies are being prepared for sustainable transport in Egypt, including electric transport and the use of natural gas as fuel to help reduce air pollution and the impacts of climate change.
Fouad added that her ministry is working to create a supportive environment for the sustainable transport system in cooperation with relevant ministries, including transport and military production and the Arab Organization for Industrialisation.
"We seek to create new cities and communities capable of addressing the effects of climate change and include an integrated system for sustainable and electric transport, in addition to the reuse of waste," she added.
The minister mentioned the new administrative capital as a model which considered systems of sustainable development. She noted that the Ministry of Environment is dealing with the pollution problem in Greater Cairo and tackling the broader environmental situation in Egypt.
