Supply Ministry to automate wheat silos in cooperation with IBM, ACME SAICO
Published in Daily News Egypt on 27 - 09 - 2021

Egypt's Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has launched a project to automate 22 wheat silos in several governorates, using IBM mechanization software in cooperation with ACME SAICO, by the end of the year.
In line with the state's plan to accelerate the pace of digital transformation, the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade represented by the Egyptian Holding Company for Silos and Storage, has established an automated platform powered by IBM Cloud Pak for Business Automation and IBM Cloud Pak for Integration to achieve comprehensive governance for all stages of shipping, transportation, and storage related to wheat handling in silos.
Through this cooperation, the new system was provided with sensors installed in silos that collect and save data and send it in real time to the main platform of the Ministry of Supply to obtain actual estimates of the quantity and quality of wheat in the silos. Thus, the Egyptian Holding Company for Silos and Storage will be able to monitor and know the actual stock in the silos and save all data related to the incoming shipments to achieve quality standards, which contributes to reducing waste significantly and improving communication and coordination mechanisms between the silos and all other storage points, as well as with the mills.
Ali Al-Moselhi, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, said, "We are committed to developing and mechanizing all silos in all governorates of the Republic, as mechanization allows us to monitor the wheat trading system through a digital platform, which provides the necessary vision to secure the supply chain and wheat stock. The automated platform supported by IBM technologies achieves the necessary efficiency, the preservation of inventory, and the non-repetition of unnecessary procedures. This project comes within the framework of the country's strategy for digital transformation to raise the level of service performance in all areas."
Sherif Basili, Chairperson of the Holding Company for Silos and Storage, said, "After modernizing and increasing the number of silos at the level of the Republic, a trend was made towards building an electronic system to connect the silos with the main centre of the Silos Holding Company and to automate the documentary cycles related to the movement of wheat circulation and monitoring in 22 silos and points. storage as a first stage."
Wael Abdoush, General Manager of IBM Egypt, said, "We are proud to be partners in implementing this strategic project that supports the path of digital transformation by providing IBM technology and hybrid computing systems, in line with the strategic plans to achieve sustainable development within Egypt's Vision 2030."
It is noteworthy that at the beginning of this year, the experimental model of the first mechanized wheat silo was tested in Banha, Qalyubia Governorate. After the success of the model, the ministry decided to develop and mechanize 22 silos before the end of this year. All silos at the Ministry's headquarters and the Supply Commodities Authority will be monitored through IBM Cognos Analytics with Watson software connected to the digital platform.
Based on the sustainable development strategy and Egypt's Vision 2030, the ministry is studying a plan to automate 400 storage points to be added to the digital system to track the country's wheat supply chains.
