Ethiopia claims Egypt, Sudan aim to monopolise River Nile waters

Ethiopia's ruling Prosperity Party says country will not cave in to diplomatic pressure regarding GERD talks

Ethiopia continues to promote its allegations regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), accusing Egypt and Sudan of wanting to monopolise River Nile waters, whilst working to harm the former's interests in development.
The Executive Committee of Ethiopia's ruling Prosperity Party has said that the completion of the GERD's second filling, and the successful completion of upcoming national elections will determine Ethiopia's fate.
In a statement on Sunday, the committee said it must be clear to all that Ethiopia will never compromise on its national interests. It added that the country will not cave in to diplomatic pressure and other influences imposed by the powers that have a great interest in the region.
The committee claimed that Ethiopia's interest in the region is based on the principles of profit for all. It noted that the country is not interested in conflicts or disputes with others who have a stake in the region in general and the Red Sea in particular.
Since Ethiopia is the source of the River Nile, it has the ability to define the geopolitics of the Horn of Africa and North Africa, the committee stated.
The committee also claimed that Ethiopia has no intention of harming the interests of others, with the statement indicating that the recent dispute between Ethiopia and Sudan is an unfortunate trend.
It emphasised that Ethiopia would work to settle the situation in a friendly manner on the basis of the historical and long-term relations between the two countries.
"We hope that Sudan will work to settle the issues by distancing itself from provocative actions," the statement added.
The ruling party indicated that it is now clear that there are forces unhappy with witnessing the construction and completion of the GERD.
