Security forces withdraw from Al-Waraq Island after clashes with residents objecting the removal of buildings and enforcements on the state's land on the island on Sunday. The decision to remove the enforcements was adjourned until further notice, state-owned media reported.
One resident was killed, while 16 residents and 11 policemen, including Deputy Director of the Giza Investigation Bureau, General Reda Al-Omda, were injured during the clashes between the residents and security forces, according to local media.
Security sources told local media that the injured were transferred to the closest hospitals for medical care, and a number of rioters were arrested, while security forces used tear gas bombs to control the demonstrators.
Security forces were on a mission to implement the removal of enforcements on the state's land on Al-Waraq Island in the Nile sector of Giza governorate. Hundreds of residents on the island demonstrated and accused the state of destroying their houses to evacuate the island and sell the land to investors, and the forces tried to end the demonstration using tear gas.
The 1,400 feddan (1,453 acre) island is considered as one of the biggest Egyptian Nile islands, located at a unique site very close to Cairo, Qalyubia, and Giza, with which Al-Waraq is affiliated.
