The Cairo Appeal Court revoked on Tuesday death and prison sentences issued against former president Mohamed Morsi and 130 other defendants for escaping the Wadi Al-Natrun prison on 28 January 2011. The prosecution earlier recommended the court to accept the appeal; however, the prosecution's recommendation was advisory not obligatory. The case included Morsi and several other leaders from the Muslim Brotherhood. The death and prison sentences were issued against them in June 2015. However, the defendants appealed the decision. Morsi is a co-defendant in three other cases, including the "Qatar espionage" and Itihadiya Palace case. Morsi came to power in 2012 as the first democratically-elected president in Egypt. However, his ouster came after mass protests on 30 June 2013 in opposition to his ruling. On 3 July 2013, the Egyptian Armed Forces ousted Morsi, a move that strained Egypt's relations with other countries such as Turkey and the US, as they described the ouster decision as a "military coup".
