Published in Daily News Egypt on 20 - 08 - 2016

Suez Canal traffic data showed that 232 ships transited the canal, with a total load of 13.7m tonnes, from 14 to 18 August 2016.
An average of 46.4 ships per day transited the canal during that period, with an average load of 2.74m tonnes per day. The average load per ship was about 59,050 tonnes during that period.
Compared to July 2015, before the inauguration of the New Suez Canal, the average daily number of transiting vessels totaled 47 vessels, with an average load of 2.76 million tonnes per day.
Three major container ships—Mayview Maersk and Munkebo Maersk from Denmark as well as Al-Nefud from Malta—transited the canal carrying 200,360 tonnes each.
The number of vessels that passed through the new channel coming from the west through the northern entrance was 125 vessels, with a daily average of 25 vessels, and a total load of 7.3m tonnes, recording a daily average of 1.46m tonnes.
Meanwhile, 107 ships transited the canal coming from the south, with a daily average of 21.4 vessels, and a total load of 6.4m tonnes, recording a daily average of 1.28m tonnes.
Vice Admiral Mohab Mamish, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, announced, during the anniversary of opening the new canal, that revenues have increased by 4% since January 2016 as of August, recording a total of $3.2bn.
Cargo load is the main measure of shipping traffic in the Suez Canal and the calculated transit fees.
